Episode 17 - Blogger of the Week

Morgan and Lily, our Ako Hiko Ambassadors at Waikōwhai, had a chat with Vivian who was Blogger of the Week earlier this year. After their first attempt at podcasting we had a lovely chat about why our voices sound different on recordings. Maybe that could be a future podcast episode...

Episode 14 - What is a Hero? Rapunzul

So, in the comments let us know what your definition of a hero is. You could also reply to other people's comments to say whether you agree or disagree with them.

ako

If you're not too familiar with the story of Rapunzel you can read or listen to a version of it here.

hanga

Option 1: Write an alternative story where the mother took option one when the witch offered the two options. Remember to use the clues in the text e.g. it says she would meet the wrong people, who might they be?

Option 2: Write the story from the witch's perspective. Is she a goodie or a baddie? Try to think about how she would have felt about Rapunzel getting other visitors? Why did she get so angry?

Option 3: "Everyone man needs to be a hero at least once in their life," said the Prince/Justin. Swap these stereotypical roles and write a story where the girl/lady/princess is the hero.

tohatoha

Share your definition of what a hero is in the comments section.

If you have had a go at one of the create tasks then share it on your blog. You could even comment below and share the link to your post with your creation. Here's a video of how to add a link in a comment.

Episode 13 - Is More Always Better? Jack and the Beanstalk

So, in the comments let us know whether you agree or disagree with the statement that more is always better. Can you think of an example for each? You could reply to other people's comments to say whether you agree or disagree with them.

ako

If you're not too familiar with the story of Jack and the Beanstalk you can read or listen to a version of it here.

hanga

Option 1: Write an alternative ending where Jack goes back down the beanstalk after stealing the five gold coins (so only what he needed - not the hen and the harp). Use the clues in the text to write your ending (for example, why did they need the money in the first place?)

Option 2: Write the story from the old man's perspective. Why didn't he want the beans himself? What did he do with the gold coins? Why did he want a cow?

Option 3: In the story the giant lives up to the stereotype of a being angry and mean. Write a prequel (set before this story) to explain what happened to make the giant hate humans. You could also explain where the golden hen and harp came from.

Episode 12 - Is it ok to lie? The Three Billy Goats Gruff

So, in the comments let us know a situation where you think it is ok to lie. You have to prove that the good that will come from the lie will outweigh anything bad that might happen from the lie.

ako

If you're not too familiar with the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff you can read or listen to a version of it here.

hanga

Option 1: Write an alternative ending where none of the goats had to lie, they all survived AND the troll got to eat something for breakfast.

Option 2: Write the story from the troll's perspective. After all, he was just sleeping and trying to eat in order to survive. Did he deserve to get washed away to sea?

Option 3: Re-write the story with different characters. A bit like Axel did.

Option 4: Retell the story as an animation. This Cybersmart Challenge will help you animate.

tohatoha

Share your ideas about when it's ok to lie, with your justification, in the comments section.

If you have had a go at one of the create tasks then share it on your blog. You could even comment below and share the link to your post with your creation. Here's a video of how to add a link in a comment.

Episode 11 - Who is the baddie? Hansel and Gretel

So who is the biggest baddie in the story? Leave a comment below and remember to include your reasons. Still want more mahi? Have a go at...

ako

If you're not too familiar with the story of Hansel and Gretel you can read or listen to a version of it here.

hanga

Option 1: Design a new solution to Hansel and Gretel's problem of either getting lost in the forest or being trapped by the witch. You could draw or explain on paper or a Google Drawing.

Option 2: Write the story from one of the other 'baddie's' perspectives. Is there a reason why they acted the way they did? Maybe they're not so bad after all?

Option 3: Retell the story as an animation. This Cybersmart Challenge will help you animate.

tohatoha

Share your ideas about who the main baddie is and explain your thinking in the comments section.

If you have had a go at one of the create tasks then share it on your blog. You could even comment below and share the link to your post with your creation. Here's a video of how to add a link in a comment.

Kia ora learners,
We need your ideas for the Ako Hiko Podcast.

Tell us about your idea for a podcast episode. You don't have to actually do the whole podcast episode on the Flipgrid, just say what your idea is and why you think it will make a good episode. If your idea is chosen I will come to your school and record it with you.
